All Things Music with Lewis Hensley!
Hey Lewis! Thank you for speaking with me today!
You just released a new single "Old Ghosts"! Tell me a bit more about where the inspiration for that song came from?
One day in the studio I was talking about how I didn’t want my past to hold me back from my future. I started messing around with an idea on guitar and started talking about ghosts. Then it hit me my Old Ghosts won’t steal the show. So I started writing with that in mind and I had the song done in a couple hours.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Some of my big influences growing up have been rock bands from the 90’s and 80’s pop.
Do you remember the first time you realized you wanted to pursue music as a career?
When I was in middle school I performed at a talent show for the show for the whole school. I had a small 3 piece band and we performed “My Own Worst Enemy” by the band Lit. The crowd went crazy. I knew then I wanted to have that feeling all the time. Bringing happiness with music was my calling.
What has been one of your favorite or most surreal moments of your career so far? Performing in the show “Your Generation In Concert” has been a real honor for me. It’s taken me around the world and I’ve shared the stage with some of the best talent in the world. Many surreal moments opening for acts like The Beach Boys, Lenny Kravitz, The Temptations, Nelly, Third Eye Blind and many more
Who are some of the artists currently inspiring you?
Currently Jon Bellion, Ryan Tedder and Louis Bell are my three favorite writers and producers I’ve learned a lot by being inspired by their skills.
If you could talk business with any artist from the past, who would you choose and why?
I would like to chat with David Bowie. He was a renegade and a rule breaker with his look and sound. He was always pushing the boundaries. It would be awesome to hear some of his stories first hand.
What do you do when you have writer's block or a creative block? Any go-to ways to shake yourself out of it?
Well first off I never get writers block thankfully and I like to think it’s because I’m not too critical with my vibe or sound. I just go with the flow and create. If it needs tweaking that’s cool but I’m not overthinking when I approach music. It’s fun and meant to be enjoyed. Speak from the heart.
Do you have a piece of advice that you would give someone just starting out in the music world?
Stay true to yourself and get some thick skin. The music is fun but the business is another animal. Learn as much as you can. Be a sponge around those doing what you admire. You need to give, give and give yourself to your craft . You will receive soo much more in return.
What's been a lesson you've had to learn since beginning your music career?
Take as old as time. TRUST your gut! Quit doubting yourself. You offer something to this world. You don’t have to be the next Jimi Hendrix. Just be you.
What do you hope to see in the music world as the industry continues to evolve?
More opportunities for kids growing up who can’t afford a laptop or computer a chance to get there ideas down and make the best songs. I wanna see the mentors of the game step up and bring the next generation of business/talent managers into the fold.
Any upcoming projects you want us to know about?
Stay tuned for lots more singles from the “Louie Lee” project. My follow up to “Old Ghosts” will be a song titled “Under Your Influence” set for a January release.
