All Things Career Inspiration with Shawney Rainne!
Updated: May 26
Hi Shawney! It is great to have you here today!
What inspired you to start pursuing music as a career?
— It’s taken me quite some time to actually pursue music full on. I’ve always had a passion for singing, writing, and creating, but I was way too shy and insecure (previously) to really jump in fully. It took several years of being surrounded and encouraged by some really incredible mentors that have had pretty successful careers themselves. A few years of them really believing in me...and eventually I started believing in me too. When I was around 12 I started writing songs, poems, and teaching myself piano...all in secret because I come from a very strict upbringing, and I didn’t know if at the time my parents would approve of what I was writing. I’ve always had this burning passion to be an artist...its taken me a lot of years to actually try to do it!
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
- I’ve always been a little all over when it comes to music influences. Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to listen to most music, unless it was approved by my parents...so my current influences are scattered. I did however sneak a CD of Maroon 5’s album Songs About Jane, which i found on the side of the road. To this day I still have every song memorized on the album. I used to perform to my dogs when no one was home :) That’s how much I loved that CD! Since those days however, I’ve really pulled from a collective of artists trying to find my sound. Biggest influences would definitely be Adele, Bishop Briggs, HER, Pink, Lady Gaga, and Anna Nalick...like I mentioned...a bit of a variety. I like to describe my sound as a mix between Adele, HER, and Bishop Briggs :)
You also have started working in modeling right? Will you tell us how you got into that?
-Yes! Last summer during Covid...I was bored lol. But a photographer reached out to me and asked if I wanted to do a TFP. I had never done that before, but I’ve been hooked ever since! If I knew more about the industry I’d definitely lean more into it, but after a quick google search I quickly realized the industry required a lot of work and I didn’t have a network in the model community. I have been booked for paid and tfp photo shoots though! I just keep my eye out for opportunities to be creative :)
What keeps you motivated?
-I didn’t have the best childhood...and because of not dealing with childhood trauma...my young adult life was very confusing, and overwhelming. I spent a lot of time not doing anything because mentally and emotionally I didn’t have the mental capacity to do much more than Bartend and try to survive my anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. What motivates me now is the self growth I’ve experienced due to the self work I’ve done the past few years. The other thing that motivates me is time. I lost a lot of time because I didn’t put in the work. Honestly, to me that’s the worst feeling. I never want to look back on life and wish I would have tried harder, took a risk, or just lived life! To me, that is the BIGGEST Motivator...bigger than financial freedom...which is about 3 on my motivation list :)
How do you keep balance between artist life and normal life?
-The art of balance is something I’m still learning and exploring. As a creative, I have several projects that I’ve started...which doesn’t leave me a lot of time for a normal life. However, networking, creating, and really immersing myself in our community is something I’m passionate about and for now, that is all a part of my “Normal life” :) I don’t have kids or a relationship that takes up a lot of my time. Relationships are tricky, but I am fortunate to have someone that understands my busy schedule and likes to help when he can! That has been super important.
Who has been your biggest cheerleader as an artist?
-My brother is always my biggest cheerleader. He’s also the most protective so naturally he’s my biggest fan too! We both have gone through a lot together, so as a big brother, I think he’s always felt its his responsibility to look after me and make sure I’m happy...which makes him my biggest supporter! Another cheerleader that I need to mention is my most influential mentor Taj George! She is with the girls group SWV, and has taken me under her wing and has been trying to help me as much as she can..that’s how I ended up on MTV!
What has been the most surreal moment of your career
-Last summer, I filmed for MTV’s show Siesta Key, and my song “Liar” was debuted and featured on the show. While we were filming July 2019 it hit me that I was filming for MTV (we filmed several scenes) and it was during the Acme performance when they literally shut down the whole venue to film where things felt the most unbelievable. I’ll never forget that performance...it was also my first ever performance...that just happened to be shown on National Television!
Do you have a dream bucket list job you would like to achieve?
What does 'making it' look like to you?
-Having the financial freedom to continue to grow as an artists and not cut corners bc of the cost of what it takes to be a successful artist! I want to travel the world and perform. When I can do that AND make money....I’ve made it! Of course I always want to keep growing though. I have a passion for building and scaling :)
